Volunteer for the Visayans (VFV) is a registered non-profit, non-government organization located in Tacloban City, Philippines.
Since its founding in 2004, VFV has dedicated itself to contributing towards sustainable developments in the areas of
child welfare, community development, education and public health through its broad-based social welfare programs.
They also host our homestay programme, a signature feature of Project Butanding where members live alongside the community we
serve. There, members are exposed first-hand to the lifestyle and culture of the community, broadening our perspectives and deepening our
connection with the people of Leyte. In addition, our members live and dine with the family of their homestay, getting to know them
better while eating delicious home cooked food!
DRTREFI is a medical school located in Tacloban, Leyte. It was founded to help tackle the shortage of doctors in Eastern Visayas and to
make medical education accessible to students. Our large-scale screenings would not have been possible without the support from 60
volunteers composed of volunteers and local pre-med and medical students from DRTREFI. They were instrumental in helping us overcome the
communication barrier with the locals, ensuring that our patients' concerns could be accurately relayed. This also helped us to build
rapport with the residents and gain their trust.
Furthermore, exchanging both cultural and medical knowledge with the enthusiastic students
greatly added to our immersion and learning of the Philippines healthcare system, and better prepared us to position ourselves to support the existing
network of health services.
The RHUs are are clinics with a team of doctors, nurses and other health workers. They serve as the first point of contact for residents in the barangays
in the event of health-related concerns and serve to promote public health in the region.
Working together with the Rural Health Units of the Santa Fe and Pastrana Municipality provided us with invaluable knowledge of
local medical struggles and a better understanding of the community's views towards seeking medical assistance. The local health workers'
active contributions were instrumental to making our health screenings in these areas a success. Data from our health screenings was also
shared with each RHU to facilitate future follow-ups with the residents screened.
